Interrupting my stream of book related posts with some standard SW programming.

Over the years, I’ve had to learn to not take it personally when patients blame doctors for issues that have to do with the American healthcare system. But it’s hard. We’re often considered the faces of healthcare, and so everything - from wait times to insurance denials - gets foisted on us. And best believe the folks who are making it less accessible are taking advantage of that! (E.g. “Patient satisfaction,” something that often is out of a physician’s control, being a major factor in our compensation.)

Still, so often, physicians want the same things patients do. We want access to affordable meds. We want to see patients in a timely manner (many of my attendings double-book their schedules in order to fit as many people in as possible, to their personal detriment!) We want more time during appointments!

I’ve been seeing more docs on Twitter speaking out about this. I’m so happy to see us advocating, or at the very least offering a glimpse behind the curtain. I hope, in the future, that HCWs and laypeople can band together to demand better for ourselves.
